Globe Trekker:  El Salvador & Honduras

Airing on KLCS, this documentary  visits the Central American countries of El Salvador and Honduras.  In the early 20th century Honduras was renowned as the archetypical "banana republic", and even today the banana is of vital importance to the country’s economy. The program covers a a day at a huge banana plantation, discovering the amazing lengths to which the growers go to keep the fruit utterly unblemished, to meet the expectations of Western supermarkets and consumers. Inland there’s a visit to  the beautiful ruins of Copan, once one of the most important cities of the Mayan empire. Moving on to El Salvador, a country now recovering from more than a decade of civil war which tore the country apart in the 1980s, there’s a visit to National Volcano Park. Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, El Salvador is a volcanic hotspot, prone to devastating eruptions and earthquakes. From the coast, viewers travel to the capital San Salvador, with its tragic history of the civil war, before heading to the Guazapa volcano, which was a guerrilla stronghold during the war. Here we meet Marisol Galindo, a former guerrilla commander, trekking across the volcano on horseback, visiting the remains of underground hideouts, bomb craters, destroyed villages, and now overgrown guerrilla cemeteries.

Hamlet

Movie  director Tony Richardson's intimate rendering of this classic Shakespearean tragedy emphasizes personal confrontations, heroic solitude and, in the title role, Nicol Williamson's penchant for caustic repartee. Some omissions detract from the spirit of the original text but this occasionally boisterous version still provides a poignant portrait of a man's obsessive search for truth. Stylized violence.   TV-PG

Gideon’s Army

In 1961, Clarence Earl Gideon was arrested for stealing soda and a few dollars from a pool hall. Unable to afford an attorney, he was convicted after representing himself at trial. Gideon appealed his conviction to the Supreme Court, which ruled unanimously that the right to counsel in a criminal case is fundamental to the American system of justice.  More than 12 million people are arrested in the United States each year. Fifty years after the landmark Gideon v. Wainwright case, most of them will be represented by one of the United States' 15,000 public defenders. Directed by attorney Dawn Porter , this documentary follows a group of idealistic young public defenders in the Deep South, where lawyers face particularly difficult challenges due to high bonds, minimum mandatory sentencing and a culture that is traditionally "tough on crime."
