With just weeks until the election, your right to vote may be at stake. New voting bills across the nation have sparked an intense battle over  who counts. Does everyone really have a voice? This documentary raises questions. What defines you? Maybe it’s the shade of your skin, the place you grew up, the accent in your words, the make up of your family, the gender you were born with, the intimate relationships you chose to have or your generation?

Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Kids Pick the President

Every four years, Nickelodeon provides kids with the rare opportunity to have the U.S. presidential candidates answer their questions in the Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, “Kids Pick the President: The Candidates,” airs tonight.  This year’s special features President Barack Obama who sat down with Nick News at the White House to answer kids’ questions. After numerous attempts by Nick News to get former Governor Mitt Romney to participate in the special, his camp declined saying he was unable to fit it into his schedule. The special features previously taped video clips of Romney addressing some of the issues raised  by kids as well as bios of both candidates. Following the special, kids have the opportunity to vote for the man they think should be the next president. Kids can log on towww.nick.com/kpp from Oct. 15 to Oct. 22 to cast their votes online, as well as to get more information about each candidate and his position on the issues. The “Kids’ Vote” is a bellwether poll because in five of the last six presidential elections, kids have correctly picked the winner several weeks before the adults have voted.

Modern Marvels: George Washington Carver Tech

As shown in this documentary, one of the 20th century's greatest scientists, George Washington Carver's influence is still felt. Rising from slavery to become one of the world's most respected and honored men, he devoted his life to understanding nature and the many uses for the simplest of plant life. His scientific research in the late 1800s produced agricultural innovations like crop rotation and composting. Part of the "chemurgist" movement that changed the rural economy, he found ingenious applications for the peanut, soybean, and sweet potato. At Tuskegee Institute, Dr. Carver invented more than 300 uses for the peanut, while convincing poor farmers to rotate cotton crops with things that would add nutrients to the soil. A visionary, Carver shared his knowledge free of charge, happy in his Tuskegee laboratory where he could use his gifts to help others. TV-PG

Winged Planet

This documentary  comes from award winning filmmaker John Downer (Elephants: Spy in the Herd, Tiger: Spy in the Jungle, Polar Bears: Spy on the Ice), who transformed wildlife filmmaking by pioneering the use of spy cameras to capture nature's most intimate moments. In This project, Downer developed a new team of spy cams to offer viewers a  view of the world from an entirely different perspective. As these remarkable birds fly, they use the landscapes below them to navigate, search for food, roost and migrate. Spy cams allow viewers a moving three-dimensional view as they ride on the backs of spectacular eagles, cranes, pelicans, snow geese and countless other birds while they soar above some of the most awe-inspiring parts of America, Africa and Europe.

As Long as I Remember: American Veteranos

Airing on KLCS, this documentary examines the  personal toll and enduring legacy of the Vietnam War on three artists from south Texas: visual artist Juan Farias, author Michael Rodriguez and actor/poet Eduardo Garza. Through the personal histories and experiences of these Chicano veterans, the film examines the role art plays in the sorting of memories, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), activism and the current conflict in Iraq. It chronicles their upbringing in the Mexican-American community, their military service in Vietnam, and their lives after the war. Farias, Rodriguez and Garza’s poignant and powerful recollections illuminate the minority experience in the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps at a time when Mexican Americans accounted for approximately 20 percent of U.S. casualties in Vietnam, despite comprising only 10 percent of the country’s population.
