Hunting the Edge of Space: The Ever Expanding Universe

Airing on KLCS, this is the concluding episode of a documentary miniseries which investigates the universe's distant past, made possible by powerful telescopes that can peer into the recesses of the cosmos. Telescopes that are focusing on invisible aspects of space---dark matter and dark energy. Far beyond our solar system, we are now discovering exoplanets  orbiting other suns, and beyond our galaxy, another hundred billion galaxies, such as Andromeda, Sombrero, and Whirlpool, each harboring hundreds of billions of stars. We've detected supermassive black holes, spinning violently at the very centers of galaxies, including our own. We've witnessed supernovas: exploding stars, millions of light-years away, spewing out superheated gas at 600,000 miles per hour. And deep inside clouds of gas and dust, billowing trillions of miles high, we can glimpse new stars being born. Now, the latest telescopes are revealing the invisible mysteries of space that we are only just beginning to understand: dark matter, the hidden scaffolding our entire cosmos is built on; and dark energy, a powerful and invisible force that is pushing our universe apart.

Liberty or Death

This program airs on KLCS. Patrick Henry's impassioned plea at the second Virginia Convention of 1775, "Give me liberty or give me death," defined the American Revolution. This documentary  captures this seminal moment in American history by balancing experts' commentary on the events preceding the second Virginia Convention with dramatic re-enactments of the historic moments that followed. Actors portraying founding fathers George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and other delegates bring the convention to life as another character, convention clerk John Tazwell, narrates the unfolding action. Historians also explain the lasting significance of the convention and Henry's speech.

Hunting the Edge of Space: The Mystery of the Milky Way

Airing on KLCS, this is the initial episode of a 2-part documentary miniseries which examines how a simple instrument, the telescope, has fundamentally changed our understanding of our place in the universe. What began as a curiosity—two spectacle lenses held a foot apart—ultimately revolutionized human thought across science, philosophy, and religion. This episode  chronicles the history of telescopes, from Galileo's refractor to Newton's reflector and beyond. It looks at key discoveries, such as those made by William Herschel and his sister Caroline, including the discovery of the planet Uranus. Hour 1 also looks at recent missions: the voyage of the Cassini spacecraft to Saturn, the Kepler telescope's search for planets beyond our solar system, and the Herschel Space Observatory's examination of the Milky Way, which is so large that it would take 100,000 years traveling at the speed of light to cross from one edge to the other.
Episode 2 airs June 27 in this  timeslot.

The program tells the story of the 22-year-old son of a sharecropper who triumphed over adversity to become a hero and world champion. NATURE:  Superfish

As seen in this documentary airing on KLCS, marine biologist and award-winning filmmaker Rick Rosenthal set out to capture on film the biggest, fastest, most dangerous gamefish in the sea — the ancient creatures known as billfish. The largest of all billfish is the marlin. They top speeds of 60 miles an hour on migrations that can span 9,000 miles. The largest, always female, weigh in at over 1,000 pounds, and are known as “granders.” Ernest Hemingway immortalized the grander in The Old Man and the Sea, the story of an elderly fisherman locked in a life and death struggle with this apex predator. To Hemingway’s great disappointment, he himself never landed a grander, although his novella captures the impact of this huge and graceful creature. This documentary travels to the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans as well as the Caribbean Sea in pursuit of these giants of the deep.

Long Shadows: The Legacy of the American Civil War

Airing on KLCS, this is a documentary about the  lasting  effects of the 1861-65  conflict on politics, economics, civil rights and foreign policy. Included are comments by former President Jimmy Carter, Robert Penn Warren, Tom Wicker and Studs Terkel.  The war the most cataclysmic event in American history--600,000 deaths, ruined cities, scorched countryside, and social revolution. It is the great and central event of our history, having captured popular and scholarly interest like no other event in our past. Historians call the Civil War our first "modern war." It ushered in the tools of death and destruction that have been developed so masterfully in modern times; and thanks to General Sherman, it began the ominous strategy of "War on the Civilian," a concept fully developed in Hiroshima and Vietnam. The program explores the ways in which the echoes of the Civil War can still be felt in American society: from politics to economics, from civil rights to foreign policy, from individual to collective memory, from South to North to West.
