Queen Victoria’s Empire: The Moral Crusade; The Scramble for Africa

Airing on KOCE, this is the final episode of a documentary miniseries about Britain’s empire. Four eminent Victorians---William Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, Gen. Charles "Chinese" Gordon and Cecil Rhodes---are the focus, which covers the final 40 years of Victoria's reign. Whether driven by profit, passion, or noble ideals, these figures would fuel an expansion unequaled in history, forever changing Britain and the lands it controlled. Personal accounts, lush reenactments, and evocative cinematography from former outposts of the Empire, including India and Africa, recount the dramatic clash of personalities and cultures that would drive Victoria's e 64-year reign.

Lust For Life

This is a movie biography of painter Vincent van Gogh, whose genius drove him mad. Most of the picture was shot where Van Gogh lived and worked, including The Hague in the Netherlands and Arles in southern France. The production team even found two older citizens of Arles who had known Van Gogh 60 years earlier; one of them had sat for the painting "The Baby Roulin." Even on location, however, there were problems to be solved. Because Van Gogh's work was so well known, the film couldn't get away with showing scenes or landscapes that had been altered since the master painted them. In one case, they had to put a tree in the ground that had been removed since the original's depiction in a famous painting. TV-PG

Papers: Stories of Undocumented Youth

This documentary, airing on KOCE, is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges of turning 18 without legal status. Currently, there are more than 2 million undocumented children who were born outside the U.S. but raised in this country. 65,000 undocumented students graduate every year from high school without "papers" and find the door to the future slammed shut. It is against the law for them to work or drive, and it is difficult, if not impossible in some states, to attend college. Yet there is no path to citizenship for these young people who know only the U.S. as home and are at risk of being deported to countries they often do not remember. This is a story about coming of age, a look at the current immigration debate and how the custom of scapegoating continues to haunt America.

This documentary, airing on KOCE, is a  bird's-eye tour of  North America.  What would it be like to see the world from a bird’s perspective? State-of-the-art technology and sophisticated camera techniques have now made it possible to do just that. Producer John Downer and his team took four years to film more than 100 bird species, using strategically placed cameras, including tiny HD cameras placed on the backs of trained birds. Fly with with snow geese, pelicans and bald eagles  across the Great Plains, Grand Canyon, Alaska, New York City and the Golden Gate Bridge.
