Dolphin Tale

In this is a movie, based on fact, a lonely and friendless boy finds and untangles a hurt dolphin that is caught in a crab trap. He becomes very attached to the dolphin when the tail must be taken off to save the dolphin's life. The boy believes the dolphin would be able to swim normally if it was given a prosthetic tail. A prosthetics specialist at the nearby VA hospital designs artificial tails, finally finding one that will work. The movie  is not only based on fact, but the actual dolphin involved, named Winter, stars in the movie as herself.  Available on DVD.

The Last Days of  Osama Bin Laden

After the United States mounted a covert mission to eliminate America’s number-one terrorist target, celebration turned to mounting questions. In this documentary  Peter Bergen obtains rare access to interview former CIA agents, Navy Seal operatives and a Black Hawk pilot who reveal how the United States gathered the intelligence needed to pull off the surprise attack. He’ll talk to White House and Pakistani intelligence officials as well as neighbors of the Pakistani compound, and eyewitnesses to the raid. SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden

This is National Geographic Channel’s   first feature-length film inspired by true events (compare to their documentary version listed above) . When the rumored whereabouts of Osama bin Laden are revealed, the CIA readies a team of seasoned U.S. Navy SEALs for the mission of a lifetime. Despite inconclusive evidence that bin Laden is inside the compound, and ignoring the possible ramifications of an unannounced attack on Pakistani soil, the Pentagon orders the attack. The SEAL Team bands together to complete their mission of justice in a riveting final showdown.  From Academy Award®-winning producer of THE HURT LOCKER Nicolas Chartier, The Weinstein Company, and John Stockwell, the director of INTO THE BLUE , the feature-length film’s stars include Cam Gigandet, Anson Mount and Freddy Rodriguez.

What's the Earth Worth?

Forged over 4.6 billion years, the Earth is stacked with valuable riches, from timber to cattle to gold. Together, these resources have built our greatest civilizations. But what if we could scan the planet as if it were in a checkout line, counting up every tree and every nugget of gold left on Earth in the biggest inventory ever attempted? This documentary will put a price tag on everything the planet has to offer, look at how much we’ve used through human history and how much is left, to reveal the absolute value of the Earth. TV-PG

The Real Story of Halloween

Warning: This is a documentary, not a movie.  Halloween began centuries ago as a pagan holiday that honored the dead and warned of a netherworld of spirits and ghosts. Today, it has morphed into a day for breaking rules, pushing boundaries and wearing disguises. But Halloween remains a time for us to deal with our own mortality. Our modern Halloween traditions have ancient roots--people were going door to door and begging for treats on Halloween night as far back as the Middle Ages. Halloweens past have been wilder and more dangerous than they are now. During the depression, Halloween became so violent and destructive that civil authorities had to step in and prevent wide-spread vandalism in cities across America. Their solution, the ritual now generates $2 billion dollars in candy sales each season. And these days adults get dressed up for the holiday almost as much as kids do. But no matter how many jack-o-lanterns get carved or kids yell "trick-or-treat!" Halloween is still all about the "scare." TV-PG
