Voters in America: Who Counts

With just weeks until the election, your right to vote may be at stake. New voting bills across the nation have sparked an intense battle over  who counts. Does everyone really have a voice? This documentary raises questions. What defines you? Maybe it’s the shade of your skin, the place you grew up, the accent in your words, the make up of your family, the gender you were born with, the intimate relationships you chose to have or your generation?

Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Kids Pick the President

Every four years, Nickelodeon provides kids with the rare opportunity to have the U.S. presidential candidates answer their questions in the Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, “Kids Pick the President: The Candidates,” airs tonight.  This year’s special features President Barack Obama who sat down with Nick News at the White House to answer kids’ questions. After numerous attempts by Nick News to get former Governor Mitt Romney to participate in the special, his camp declined saying he was unable to fit it into his schedule. The special features previously taped video clips of Romney addressing some of the issues raised  by kids as well as bios of both candidates. Following the special, kids have the opportunity to vote for the man they think should be the next president. Kids can log on towww.nick.com/kpp from Oct. 15 to Oct. 22 to cast their votes online, as well as to get more information about each candidate and his position on the issues. The “Kids’ Vote” is a bellwether poll because in five of the last six presidential elections, kids have correctly picked the winner several weeks before the adults have voted.

Modern Marvels: George Washington Carver Tech

As shown in this documentary, one of the 20th century's greatest scientists, George Washington Carver's influence is still felt. Rising from slavery to become one of the world's most respected and honored men, he devoted his life to understanding nature and the many uses for the simplest of plant life. His scientific research in the late 1800s produced agricultural innovations like crop rotation and composting. Part of the "chemurgist" movement that changed the rural economy, he found ingenious applications for the peanut, soybean, and sweet potato. At Tuskegee Institute, Dr. Carver invented more than 300 uses for the peanut, while convincing poor farmers to rotate cotton crops with things that would add nutrients to the soil. A visionary, Carver shared his knowledge free of charge, happy in his Tuskegee laboratory where he could use his gifts to help others. TV-PG
