Deadly Dose: Dr. Sanjay Gupta Reports

A deadly drug epidemic is currently unfolding in the U.S. with prescription drug overdoses, particularly painkillers. Prescription drug poisoning is now a more common way to die than being killed in a car accident. This is just one of the startling statistics in Dr. Sanjay Gupta's new CNN documentary, "Deadly Dose.”

W.

This is director Oliver Stone’s cinematic art version of the life and controversial presidency of George W. Bush ( played by Josh Brolin). Flashbacks to key events in his life reveal his rise from ne'er-do-well party boy and son of privilege to president of the United States. After trading in booze for religion, George mends his aimless ways and sets his sights first on the Texas governorship, then on the presidency. But the country's involvement in the Iraq war decreases his approval rating. Rated TV-14

Shelter Me

Airing on KLCS, this documentary spotlights successful adoptions of shelter pets. Also: how shelter pets help returning war veterans cope with their injuries; and teach inmates new life lessons. Every year, 3-4 million dogs and cats are euthanized in America’s shelters. The program shows how rescued shelter pets are helping our returning war veterans cope with PTSD. We go inside a women’s prison, where inmates train shelter dogs to become service animals for people with disabilities. We also see the journey of two stray dogs, from the day they are picked up on the streets and brought to the shelter until the day they become a beloved family pet.

Mankind: The Story of All of Us: New World

In this documentary goes back in time. The Aztecs have built a mighty empire that dominates Central America. But it will be destroyed because of a domino effect. 7,000 miles away in modern-day Turkey, the great trading center of Constantinople is overrun by an Islamic army. Europeans race to find a new route to the spice-rich East. Instead, Christopher Columbus lands in America--and discovers gold. Within 30 years the Aztecs will be conquered. In the Andes, the Spanish open up the largest silver mine in the world--and mint millions of pesos de ocho (pieces of eight). These coins transform the global economy. They fill the treasure chests of pirates. They fuel a stock market boom. They help pay for the Taj Mahal. As trade booms, millions of people come to the New World as slaves. But a handful of Pilgrims come as pioneers--looking for freedom. TV-PG

Modern Marvels: Dirt

You know the old saying "dull as dirt"...wrong! Viewers of this documentary will see how, in Las Vegas, thousands of tons of dirt transform a stadium into a Supercross course, and in New Jersey we'll slog into a secret bog to collect the special mud that every major league team relies on to give extra grip to baseballs. Then, we'll join in the down and dirty fun of mud wrestling at a state fair in Hawaii. In Tucson we'll see how modern adobe and stunning rammed-earth homes are made. To farmers, "dirt" is "soil" and in a teaspoon of healthy soil there are more living organisms than people on our planet. We'll find out where they came from at a sprawling potting soil facility in central California where huge earth moving equipment adds tons of dried kelp, bat guano and other ingredients to dirt. At exclusive spas we'll watch patrons submerge in mud. Finally, we'll visit the Tide detergent factory--why? To get the dirt out, of course. TV-PG
