The Pixar Story

This documentary  takes viewers inside the company that transformed the animated film industry. Using never-before-seen footage from the Pixar library, along with historic archival animation and first-hand accounts by animators, studio executives, directors, producers, and voice performers, Academy Award nominated filmmaker Leslie Iwerks tells the story of the Bay Area start-up that revolutionized Hollywood.
In the mid 1980’s, an inspired and inspiring trio of innovators combined their gifts in art, science and business to launch a new way to make 3-D animated films and changed the face of filmmaking forever. Ed Catmull, John Lasseter and Steve Jobs overcame years of creative struggle and financial loss to launch an entirely new animation industry, starting with the first full-length CG film Toy Story. Iwerks takes viewers on a dramatic journey filled with personal sacrifice and fueled by passionate belief in the possibilities of a new medium as Pixar Animation Studios is born.  TV-G

Need To Know

Airing on KOCE, this news documentary profiles two innovative jobs programs at opposite ends of the country. First, an update on a state program in Oregon that encourages workers who have been fired to use their unemployment benefits to start new businesses. The idea is that if the new businesses succeed – and they do at an usually high rate – these new employers will hire workers of their own. Rhode Island is using unemployment insurance to keep workers on the job. The so-called “workshare plan” enables businesses thinking of firing workers to reduce their hours instead. The state makes up most of the difference in pay. This means the state pays out less than if the workers had been fired, employees get to keep their jobs, and companies keep their workforces essentially intact.

Deadly Dose: A Dr. Sanjay Gupta Investigation

Every 19 minutes, someone dies of an accidental drug overdose. What might surprise you is those drugs are perfectly legal, and the people using them come from all walks of life. They often don’t think they’re doing anything wrong. But it’s becoming a deadly dose. Prescription drugs now kill more people in America each year than car crashes. In this documentary  Dr. Sanjay Gupta explores the growing problem, and helps you not to become a statistic.

How The States Got Their Shapes

We are so familiar with the map of United States, but do we know why our states look the way they do? Every shape on the map tells a great story about our past. Why is California bent? To cling on to gold. Why does Oklahoma have a panhandle? Because of shifting borders for slavery. Why does Missouri have a boot? Because of a massive earthquake. This documentary  examines how every state is a puzzle piece ultimately revealing the unique geography, political and social history of America.   TV-PG

Do You See What I See?

Roses are red, violets are blue or so you may think; but do we know it's true? The human eye is able to distinguish around 2.5 million different colors. But what is color, is it even real and what would life be like without it? This documentary  reveals a surprising truth about how we all see the world. You may think a rose is red, the sky is blue and the grass is green, but it now seems that the colors you see may not always be the same as the colors I see. Your age, sex and even mood can affect how you experience colors. Scientists have unlocked the hidden power that colors can have over your life – how red can make you a winner, how blue makes time speed up, and more. TV-G
