Heat and Harvest: Impact of Climate Change on California Agriculture

Airing on KCET, this documentary cites recent report commissioned by the state EPA and Energy Commission. Yields in key crops are expected to drop significantly over the coming decades as climate change alters key growing conditions. The list of crops most directly affected under business as usual conditions, assuming a 2 degree warming by 2050, reads like a walk through a supermarket produce section: yields of citrus crops in the San Joaquin Valley are expected to drop about 18% by 2050; grapes about 6%; cherries and other orchard crops about 9%. But this is not just a look into the state's future. California's farms, often called the nation's breadbasket, are already feeling the effects of the trifecta of converging forces prompted by climate change: shorter cold seasons, longer seasons of extreme heat, and dwindling water supplies.

How the West Was Won
This multiple-Oscar winning movie follows four  generations of pioneers who  take part in the forging of the American West. Director John Ford focuses  on the human element,  never losing the story or interest in all the history-based activity - through the development of the West, starting in 1839 with a journey through the Erie Canal and then towards the frontier. Other segments show the family as they try to establish a home, get caught in the Civil War, witness the westward expansion of the railroad and encounter outlaws. The film is both a tribute and a reminder of those vanished times and its populated by mountain men, the US Cavalry, gamblers, sheriffs, farmers, soldiers , Native Americans and buffalo herds.  TV-G

Deadwood Tech

Located in South Dakota's Black Hills, in this  rip-roaring town,  primitive technology met bold innovations, commerce and corruption collided, and shootouts were as common as the filth that filled the streets. This documentary examines the good, bad, and ugly technologies of the last and richest gold-rush town, including stagecoaches and stagecoach robberies; bull whacking and bull trains; gold counterfeiting; saw mills; smelter and cyanide mills; electric marquees; and mortuary science. And we feature forensic analysis of Wild Bill Hickok's death, and say howdy to a few of Deadwood's other famous characters like Calamity Jane. TV-PG Log on  http://www.cityofdeadwood.com/
